Today I’d like to introduce you to another resource that has been invaluable to my game development so far: The freesound.org Sound Archive
On freesound.org you can get sounds and sometimes music that you can use for your projects. The sound quality really varies and you will not always find what you are looking for, but the price tag (it’s FREE!) is convincing enough to make some compromises here and there. Whenever I could not find a sound that I needed from there, I either tried to do it myself or substituted by using a different kind of sound or making one with my mouth – which worked surprisingly well. UPDATE 08.07.2011: Forums are back online now. I won’t be doing design adjustments for it (I want to be able to upgrade it any time I want without having to redo the changes)
Several Anti-Spam measures are in Place, so I hope I can have some peace of mind now. I’ll be moving on to do some last minute testing for Space Madness, and capture some new media for it.
If you visited us before you may have noticed we changed appearance. With the release of Space Madness drawing closer I felt it was necessary to spice up the websites appearance a little. Previously we had a seperate Blog powered by WordPress, and static pages I coded on my own. I felt that was too much of a mess so I heavily modified a theme to our purposes, modernized the product pages and made the Blog the only CMS active.
Thanks to this move I get a few advantages I can use before release, such as the excellent SEO (fancy term describing how easy you can be found from search engines like google) that WordPress + Plugins provide. Those WordPress Plugins are another reason for the transition to fully WordPress, too, since it practically allows us to anything we want
I am currently also changing forums. The old version was kind of a underground choice and hasn’t developed much anymore in recent times, causing all sorts of security issues and problems with Spambots. I am not sure we really need forums because it’s rare for small indies to have a whole lot of buzzing activity going on in them, but I will reopen a forum just because I like collecting answered help requests that other users can access easier. So, expect the new forum going up in the next few days.
Meanwhile Space Madness draws closer to release. I can’t specify when yet, probably by the end of the month. We will see, I will make an official announcement when it’s time. I already am in touch with the excellent payment processor “BMT Micro” so there shouldn’t be any problems with buying it in the future. BMT Micro isn’t an Indie’s preferred solution without reason, you know? They got some great support going on and it is really easy to use, you can even shop between sites that use BMT Micro so if you put Space Madness into the checkout and go on to another Indie Developer that also uses BMT Micro, you can put their game in it too and buy both at the same time – how cool is that???!
I’m also starting to collect ideas for blog posts and prepare those for publishing. In the past I’ve neglected that a little because I prefer spending time burried in code while making a game, and honestly I was a little afraid of reactions to the stuff I have to say. That’s a thing of the past now, I will still dedicate to games but I will post just what I have on mind without thinking twice about it. Coding mentality helps for composing blog posts, and maybe someone appreciates the “Diary” style of my entries. It certainly will give you insights on future developments post-release of my first game.
So stick around, enjoy the new design, and look forward to playing Space Madness very soon!
